Giving young mums a new future

Being a mum is a busy job in itself, but with Helena's New Futures project those aged 17-23, are receiving one-to-one assistance to find work.

Running for the last two years, the scheme offers tailored advice, as well as the support needed to boost confidence and reduce social isolation. Activities include mock job interviews, CV writing techniques, business dress workshops, 'Meet the Employer' days and four week work trials.

Kellie O'Brien, a 27-year-old mum of four from Parr will soon be starting a hospitality placement at Chalon Court Hotel.

Kellie said: "I've been a stay-at-home mum for the last 8 years and becoming part of New Futures has helped me in so many ways. Before I struggled to get job interviews, and if I did, they didn't go as well as I'd hope so my confidence was knocked and I started to wonder how I would ever find work.

I'm so excited to be starting my placement and can't wait to build my skills hands-on in the workplace. Thanks to Helena I now believe I can do it."

Cath Brooks, Outreach Supervisor at Helena, said: "Being a young mum comes with lots of pressures and responsibilities and getting into employment as well can be very daunting.

New Futures is just one way at Helena we can help our young customers live more independently while at the same time having someone there to support them every step of the way."

New Futures is now looking to develop its services further by working with even more partners throughout St Helens, expanding its reach across the borough and changing even more lives for the better.
