Make it Happen this summer

This summer Helena's Make it Happen project will once again be hosting a range of fun and educational activities across St Helens.

Whether in Thatto Heath, Four Acre, Parr or Fingerpost, with Big Lottery Fund support, people of all ages will have lots to take part in, including new family boxing sessions thanks to Wildcard Amateur Boxing Club.

Running on Thursdays and Saturdays throughout the school holidays at Derbyshire Hill Youth Club, the team of dedicated coaches will be teaching the basics of amateur boxing.

Coach and Chair Dominic Hodnett said: "With the continued support of Helena, re:new and St Helens Council since 2009 we've been able to expand our club and become an integral part of the Parr community. By now working with Make it Happen we are very much looking forward to providing even more opportunities for local children and their families this summer."

One regular attendee, Olivia Hussey, 15, from Derbyshire Hill recently took home a gold medal at the All Ireland International Competition. Olivia said: "I love coming to Wildcard, it's fun and a great way for me to stay fit, make new friends and be part of a team. Training is really exciting and I hope to win even more titles in the future."

Caroline Roberts, Project Officer for Young People at Helena, concludes: "This club is a great example of how Make it Happen supports positive change in our local communities. It's so important that we support projects that provide a safe and stimulating place for young people to participate in activities. Not only does it improve community cohesion but raises their self esteem, skills and abilities."
