Helena creates greener sheltered housing

As part of Helena's ongoing commitment to improving homes, a quarter of a million pound investment project has recently been completed at a sheltered housing scheme in Billinge.

Thanks to the installation of a ground source heat pump, residents of the 23 flats on Rainford Road, will now benefit from the latest renewable energy system and save money on their heating bills too.

Martin Roughley, Sustainability and Innovation Manager, said: "Earlier in the year holes were drilled in the ground to create a virtually inexhaustible natural heat source. This is then connected to a new heating system which has been installed and run directly into our customer's homes."

Maureen Twist, Scheme Manager adds: "With the thermostats that have been fitted in every flat resident's can keep the temperature of their homes constant and in line with Age UK recommendations. This means healthier customers, less energy being wasted and a saving of over £10,000 a year on heating bills across the scheme."

Mary Arnold, who has lived at Rainford Road for 13 years, said: "The work Helena has done has been fantastic. Paul, Bob, Neil, James and all the team have worked so hard every day and been very considerate. I'm now looking forward to having a lovely warm home in time for winter without the worry of how I will pay for it."

Martin concludes: "At Helena we are always looking at ways we can combine the latest technologies with value for money. Investing in projects like this, with help from the Government Renewable Heat Incentive, means it may be more expensive initially but over the long term we are actually receiving income as a reward for reducing costs as well as our carbon footprint, plus creating sustainable and more affordable homes for the future."
