Innovative new dementia group for residents

Helena has recently launched an innovative new support group to further help residents and their families living with dementia and memory loss.

Held in conjunction with the Looking Forward Dementia Support Group, the Alzheimer's Society and health and social care charity Making Space, residents with a memory problem or a diagnosis of dementia, as well as their carers, will meet every fortnight at Parrmount Court, Fingerpost.

At the sessions attendees have the opportunity to expand their knowledge and understanding of what it is like to live with dementia, as well as get involved in a wide range of projects and activities to improve experiences, boost wellbeing and stimulate memories.

Nikki Wilkinson, Project Officer for Older People, said: "The new group is really unique and was launched to help not just our residents but also the wider community. We hope that by being held at such a central location in the town the support on offer will help people throughout St Helens live well with dementia."

To mark the launch attendees, including Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing Councillor Andy Bowden, enjoyed live performances from the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra's Ensemble of St Luke's, who played songs from famous composers as well as music from resident's favourite musicals.

Jean Cunningham, 70, added: "Dementia or memory loss has affected lots of people here, whether it's directly, or like me through a friend or family member. This group will allow people going through similar situations make new friends and build their confidence."

Cllr Andy Bowden concluded: "It's so important to help those with dementia to keep physically and mentally active. Groups like this enable people to come together, reminisce, talk, share experiences and enjoy themselves in a safe place."

The group will run every other Monday, 1:30-3:00pm, to find out more, contact Nikki Wilkinson on 07919217483 or email Nichola.Wilkinson@HelenaPartnerships.co.uk
