Local children make it happen

Throughout the school holidays, Helena's Make it Happen project is delivering a range of fun activities to children and families across St Helens.

Supported by the Big Lottery Fund, the project recently delivered 10 weeks of professional badminton coaching and free after school clubs at Broadway Badminton Club, concluding with a celebratory interschool tournament.

Caroline Roberts, Young People's Project Officer at Helena, said: "The Make it Happen project aims to engage as many young people as possible in activities which promote learning new skills as well as a healthy lifestyle. Our badminton club has proven so popular that we're now extending the sessions over the summer."

On the day of the tournament, pupils from St Austin's Primary School and Thatto Heath County Primary played against each other, before receiving medals and water bottles from Helena's Managing Director, Angela Perry.

Angela said: "The children all worked really hard and I was delighted to be able to reward them all with a much deserved medal. I hope this introduction to badminton will give them a taste for the sport and inspire them to continue playing in the future."

Linda Eccleston, Coach at Broadway Badminton Club, said: "Helena's investment in projects like this gives children the chance to try a sport for the first time as well as access state of the art sports venues on their doorstep.

Since the project started, we've seen a rise in numbers of children attending the club, and we're so happy to see young people getting involved in fun and healthy activities within their community."

The free classes will be running every Friday until October 2nd, 5-6pm at Broadway Badminton Club.
