Starting the day the right way

Helena have supported a group of local volunteers to set up a weekly breakfast club, making sure the residents of Haydock don't miss out on the most important meal of the day.

Held every Wednesday, 10-11.30am in the Community Room of O'Connell Close sheltered scheme, "Come Dine With Us" offers a selection of hearty cooked breakfasts, as well as hot drinks from as little as 10p.

Resident Marian Nicholson said: "I'm partially blind so it's hard for me to cook certain things for myself. It's a real comfort to both me and my family knowing I can come here and get a delicious hot meal without having to worry about my safety, all for a price I can afford."

Funding is secured to train those involved in successful café management, with attendees learning catering and menu planning through to stock control and allergy awareness. The ongoing costs of the club are then paid for though the food and drinks sold.

With people of all ages attending each week, this essential service already includes daily breakfast clubs from 9:30-10:30am at Parrmount Court, Fingerpost. As well as lunch clubs at Sandalwood Gardens, Sutton on Wednesdays 12-1pm and Parrmount Court Wednesday and Fridays, 12pm-1pm.

Nikki Wilkinson, Older People's Project Officer said: "There's a real sense of community here, residents lay the tables, whilst dedicated volunteers cook, clean and serve. People of all ages attend regularly and in these difficult times, with changes to benefits and economic hardship, we aim to help and support our most vulnerable customers."
